The All England Club has announced that the
traditional day of Wimbledon will end comfortably in the middle of the
tournament on Sunday, 2022.
Wimbledon is currently the only Grand Slam to take a
day off during the sixth, but it provides scheduling challenges, especially
when the weather is bad in the first week.
At the tournament's spring press briefing. Chairman
Ian Hewitt said that progress in maintaining grass courts meant that the 14-day
game was now considered possible.
Traditionally, the SW19 had a rainy day in the middle
of the tournament due to rain, which led to many matches.
If that happened then the matches would be cut in half
to catch the tournament but this rest day would be used only when necessary.
Middle Sunday has been used only four times in its
144-year history - in 1991, 1997, 2004, and 2016 - to play incomplete matches.
The tournament will return this year when it did not
have a coronavirus epidemic in 2020.
"We intend to provide the best possible
championship in terms of public safety," Hewitt said. It must be different
from Wimbledon, as we know it. '
Wimbledon is working with the government on
arrangements for this year's tournament, which starts on June 28.
With this hope, at least 25 percent coverage is
currently being planned, which is expected to increase, with ticket sales
expected in June.
Hewitt revealed that Wimbledon paid 180million in
epidemic insurance. which covered the club's losses from the 2020 cancellation.
This helped give AELTC the Lawn Tennis Association, which
receives an annual surplus from the championship, paying about 36 million.
