In addition to plans to host the 2032 Olympic Games, the Queensland government has announced plans to upgrade Gabba in the coming years.
Home to both cricket and the AFL in the state, Gabba has a rich history and has been home to some amazing moments in both sports.
Premier Anastasia Plaszkok has confirmed plans to upgrade the stadium to accommodate 50,000 people, citing the Olympics as the main reason why they feel the need to upgrade.
"Every game needs a home," he said.
"Gabba has been our sports home since 1895.
"The home of the 2032 Olympic Paralympic Games can be a source of greatness."
Following the government's announcement on Tuesday morning, both Cricket Australia and Queensland Cricket issued a statement supporting the decision.
Cricket Australia's interim CEO Nick Hawkley believes the upgrade will put Gabba at the forefront of cricket.
"The GABA is one of Australia's most important, famous and historic cricket grounds and we are pleased that the Queensland government has agreed to a major restoration, if Brisbane should have the right to host the 2032 Olympic Games," he said.
"Just as the 2000 Olympics gave cricket a double legacy, the stadiums Australia and Sydney Showgrounds - both became international cricket venues, so the Brisbane Games in 2032 provided Gibbaba with state-of-the-art facilities. Compete against any of the stadiums.
"Australian cricket is fortunate to have developed so many great venues in recent years and would be happy to see Gibba on this list."
AFL CEO Galen McLachlan also backed the decision, saying it came at a good time after Brisbane's victory in the AFLW Grand Final.
"The GABBA is a world-class stadium that has hosted football in the state for almost a century, and we welcome the announcement today by Premier Anastasia Plaszczyk and Sports Minister Sterling Heinchev to continue the GABBA. Looking forward to working with the government to ensure this. We will play a key role in the development of our sport in Queensland for the next 100 years, "he said.
"The ABBA has been instrumental in the development of our sport and has helped us deliver the Toyota AFL Premiership season in 2020, including hosting our first grand finale outside Victoria at night. included.
"Today's announcement that the ground will be changed is great news for Queensland football fans who are already celebrating this weekend after Brisbane's victory in the NAB AFLW Grand Final this weekend. "
