Glazer seeks to prevent Woodward from resigning as Man United chief

According to reports, Manchester United co-chairman Joel Glazer tried to persuade Ed Woodward to resign when he offered to leave the club yesterday.

Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, has resigned after his position was deemed inadmissible following the collapse of European Super League plans, which drew condemnation from supporters.

Now, the Times reports that the American owner, Glazer, tried to talk to Woodward before leaving yesterday morning, but he failed.

The report states that Woodward has told people close to him that trying to form the Super League was the biggest mistake of his career and he regrets it.

Club sources said Woodward intended to leave at the end of the year anyway - and to stay until then - but the announcement was made to avoid a leak.

Woodward was a key figure in one of the most controversial projects for the new Breakaway League, with his links to US investment bank JPMorgan providing 3.3 billion in funding.

Confirming his decision on Tuesday night, Woodward said: "I am very proud to serve United and it is an honor to work for the world's biggest football club for the last 16 years.

"The club is well-positioned for the future and it will be difficult to get out at the end of the year.

"I will cherish the memories of Old Trafford from my time when we won the Europa League, the FA Cup, and the EFL Cup. I am proud of the new generation of club culture and the way Manchester United returns to play.

"We have invested more than 1 1 billion in the squad during our time here and I am particularly pleased with the progress of the players over the last two years under the amazing leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskier and his coaching team," he said. Û”

"I am convinced that with the changes we have made on the field and in the coaching and football staff in recent years, this huge club is soon picking up silverware again. Deserves it

"I really wanted the club to win the Premier League in my time and I believe we have the foundation to win for our passionate fans."
