Damon Hill has sided with George Russell on whether DRS should have been allowed to influence the Williams driver's major Imola accident.
At a speed of about 200 miles per hour on a muddy track, Emilia Romagna lost control of the Grand Prix lap 32 when she collided with a Mercedes and drove both cars out of the race with great damage.
The two had an angry confrontation after their cars came to rest, after which Russell apologized for his behavior, which included a clear slap on his opponent's helmet.
The 23-year-old British soldier then said that perhaps due to circumstances, perhaps the DRS should not have been activated, while race director Michael Massey said: "The track was perfectly fine from that point of view and on it. There was no problem.
Hill, the 1996 world champion, believes that the next time such a scenario unfolds, it would be better if the FIA made a cautious mistake.

"It's up to them not to allow the DRS and I think they might have to reconsider next time," Hill said during the F1 Nation podcast.
"I'm sure George, as the director of the GPDA (Grand Prix Drivers' Association), will bring this up at the next meeting!
"I think most of the drivers I talked to about it, who saw it, concluded that George had some responsibility because he wasn't just going to pass. Yes, it was on a slightly damp track, it was always tight, so you need everything to work, but the problem was that it opened its DRS.
"If you have the DRS open, you don't have that much load on the rear tires and they light up on this damp patch and they collect each other."
In terms of Russell's strong reaction, Hill compared it to another famous encounter in Wet.
"It was like the 1998 spa race when Michael Schmacker went to the back of David Colthard, who was on the racing line, and Michael misunderstood," Hill said.
"I've never seen Michael cross so much. He went to the garage to try and keep one on DC. I think when you have such a horrible incident, it sometimes turns a little angry." And you try to blame someone.
