The Tampa Bay Buccaneers don’t have any glaring needs
as they head into the 2021 NFL draft, having brought back their entire starting
lineup from last year’s Super Bowl team.
That means they could go in any direction with their
first-round pick Thursday night. Including a potential successor for Tom Brady
at quarterback.
One candidate who appears to be generating some buzz
is Florida’s Kyle Trask, who could be a match for Tampa Bay at No. 32 overall,
per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano:
If a sixth quarterback can sneak into Round 1, Tampa
Bay and Trask is a fit that multiple NFL people have connected. He’s a pure
pocket guy who can throw on platform at a high level, which is what Bruce
Arians loves. Tampa has all roster needs met and can truly make a luxury pick
at No. 32.
Trask would indeed be a solid fit for what the Bucs
want in a quarterback, but spending a first-round pick on him would be quite
the reach. He showed above-average ability as a passer in college, but not the
kind of top-end traits that would be worth spending a top pick.
The Bucs might not have immediate needs elsewhere in
the starting lineup, but expiring contracts next offseason could leave them
with holes at outside linebacker, defensive line, offensive line, and
cornerback. Addressing those needs with a prospect worthy of a first-round pick
would be a wiser use of that selection. Instead of taking a mid-round,
quarterback prospect who won’t even see the field for at least another year or
two.
